ALIGN Apparel
As part of StartUp, the Savannah College of Art and Design's Premier Design Competition, I, along with a group of 3 other designers, created a cutting-edge line of fitness apparel featuring smart textiles and biometric sensors embedded along the joints. This technology helps reduce injuries caused by poor form and strain during activities like weightlifting.
Role
In this team dynamic, I performed as researcher, graphic designer, marketer and product manager.

Problem
As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of people working out and exercising on their own skyrocketed since 2020. This resulted in home-exercise injury related emergency room visits to increase 48%. 68% of those injuries targeted 3 specific areas: the neck, shoulders and lower back.

What is ALIGN
ALIGN Apparel is athletic wear featuring smart textiles with integrated sensors strategically placed in areas prone to athlete strain. The aim is to enhance exercise form by incorporating sensors (accelerometers and flex sensors) into our fabric. These sensors detect joint misalignment and provide real-time feedback through vibrations. The smart apparel is accompanied by a comprehensive mobile application that tracks and monitors this data and provides real time help and personalized health insights.

Research
The competition was only a week long so we were mainly limited to secondary research. I focused primarily on the science and feasibility of the proposed solution. I found that although there were companies producing the different aspects of our idea separately, there was a high demand for a solution that combined smart textiles and biometric sensors with accelerometer and flex sensors.

Mobile/watch Application
In addition to the line of apparel, we designed a companion mobile application that is able to track health data, provide insights along with a slew of other features. seen below.
